The Twelfth Man 2013

17 A few words from WCLS Coaching Co-ordinator – John Ambler What a marvelous end to the coaching sessions the Presentation Night was. I would like to thank the WCLS for the presents and very kind words to Beryl and I as we stand down after seven years as co-ordinators. It was much appreciated the number of people who, at the last session, were full of praise for all the coaches who willing give their time and expertise to help the 30 youngsters who signed up for the 2013 sessions and also the WCLS, for making the sessions available by subsidising the cost. Beryl and myself also want to add our appreciation and thanks to Brian Marsh, Sam Wilson, Brian Workman and Darren Crossland for their sterling work and thanks also to Rob Hulley for standing in and helping when we were short-handed. We are always happy to see Mike Damms, who still calls in a couple of times per session to do a bit of coaching. Our older members will remember that Mike was a main stay of the coaching for a lot of years. Brian Workman will be taking over as Co-ordinator. I am sure all the coaches will be pleased to work with him. Beryl will be taking a step back but if Brian needs me I am willing to help with the coaching. We wish him all the best and every success and hope he enjoys the weekly sessions each year as much as we have. Brian Workman’s net, helped by Ron Hulley – The Derek Moxon Award The runner-up played a few games of organised cricket last season for the first time and, as a newcomer to the nets, has improved both his batting and bowling during the course. He plays with a smile, listens to advice and works hard on improving his techniques. He has worked on his bowling action to deliver from a more side-on position and can swing the ball, although he still needs to work on his follow-through and make sure that he completes his action. He is gradually learning to keep stiller at the crease and play straighter and his coach looks forward to helping him progress again next year. The runner-up is Evan Richards The winner has only just started to play organised cricket and this was his first year at the nets. He has a very good attitude and is always happy to listen to, and put into practice, any advice he receives. His action has improved greatly and, with a bit more work, this player has the potential to WCLS Coaching Awards 2013 Wombwell’s coaching team reflect on the 2013 winter nets and the young cricketers chosen as award winners at the Society’s ‘end-of-term’ presentation evening on 28 March Coaching Class 2013
