21 South Yorkshire Senior Cricket League Handbook 2013 Edited by Jim Beachill £8.95 The quality and depth of South Yorkshire cricket is fully reflected in the SY League handbook, compiled by the dedicated General Secretary of many parts, Jim Beachill. Within its pages any follower of local league cricket will find a broad range of content: quality articles from those involved, reports, awards, fixtures for 2013, a gallery of images (many colour!), stats and tables from 2012 and all the relevant historical information. 2012 was not an easy season for the South Yorkshire Cricket League: disciplinary problems and horrendous weather that ruined cricket across the country. Officials, players and spectators will hope for brighter skies and exciting cricket to make up for the forgettable ‘summer’ of 2012. Treeton CC won both the Premier Divison and the Whitworth Cup last season. By the time you read this review the 2013 winners should be known. One thing is sure the SYC handbook will be there to record their achievements again next year. This handbook sets the benchmark to which other league publications should strive for. Mick Pope The Sweetest Rose by David Warner Published by Great Northern – £17.99 This book comes with the very strongest recommendation from WCLS Committeeman, Colin Barker: “A pleasure to read, full of interesting statistics covering the first 150 years of Yorkshire County Cricket Club” and after borrowing Colin's copy, beautifully dedicated I might add by the author, I heartily concur with my friends assessment. We had recently met David at a Wombwell evening where he charmed us all with his stories. The History of Yorkshire CCC has been told many times, particularly in this very special Sesquicentennial year, but David’s account can stand comparison with any other.
