! 12 T he!feature!of!calling!on! retired!County!cricketers,! introduced!in! The!Twelfth!Man ! three!years!ago!was!received! with!acclaim!by!members!and! there!is!no!doubt!that!the!visits! are!a!real!delight.!After!doing!the! first!(Ted!Lester)!alone,!our!now! Treasurer,!Brian!Sanderson,! accompanied!me!calling!on!Don! Wilson!and!Bob!Appleyard!and! now!I!am!delighted!to!welcome! Brian!Workman!as!a!valuable! member!of!the!team.!I!would! hope!the!series!might!continue! far!into!the!future,!as!from!my! point!of!view!it!is!great!to!be! joined!by!younger!colleagues.!! Early!in!December,!along!with!the! two!Brian’s!we!found!our!way!to! Bryan!Stott’s!fine!old!home,!not!far! from!Yeadon!Airport,!where!he!and!his!lovely! wife!made!us!feel!really!at!home.!We!talked,!quite! literally!for!hours,!both!before!and!after!an! excellent!lunch.!!! Cricket!was!certainly!in!his!blood,!for!his!Dad,!as! well!as!running!a!successful!plumbing!business,! was!an!able!player!for!Yeadon!playing!in!the! Airedale!and!Wharfedale!League.! A day with BRYAN STOTT Words by Norman Hazell MBE Bryan!showed!outstanding!ability!while!still!at! school,!Aireborough!Grammar!School,!from!where! he!found!a!place!in!the!Yorkshire!Schools!team.!It! was!there!that!a!lifeMlong!friendship!with!Doug! (Padgett)!and!Ken!(Taylor)!started.!He!told!us!that! Ken!was!the!most!talented,!but!all!three!were! selected!for!a!North!v!South!trial!match,!then! England!Schools.!Incidentally,!he!was!an!allMround! sportsman:!Captain!of!the!Yorkshire!Schools! Football!team.!! It!was!a!delight!to!just!sit!and!listen!–!hour!after! hour!–!as!he!reminisced,!not!needing!any!prompt,! although!every!time!Brian!Sanderson!produced! one!of!his!old!scorecards,!stories!just!poured!out,! telling!endless!tales!about!characters.! Asked!about!early!second!eleven!games,!he!not! only!recognised!all!the!names,!but!added!details!of! where!they!came!from!and!their!attributes.!Some! of!them!went!on!to!play!at!the!top!level,!while! others!just!faded!off!into!League!cricket.!!
