! 16 ( The%funeral%service,%including%Holy%Communion,%took% place%on%Tuesday,%December%3,%at%St%Margaret's% Church,%Swinton%and%was%followed%by%private%burial% in%the%churchyard%and%a%reception%at%the%Crown%Inn,% Barnburgh.% James(Greenfield((Chairman)(and(Ron(Firth((ViceU Chairman)( Always'a'friendly'welcome'amidst'her'work %–% a( personal(tribute(by(Secretary(Mick(Pope.( When(I(started(attending(Wombwell(meetings(with( some(regularity(in(the(late(1980s(I(was(greeted(and( welcomed(by(a(number(of(what(I(came(to(call(the( ‘Society(backUbenchers’.(Included(among(the(group(of( members(that(populated(the(seats(in(the(far(rightU hand(corner(of(our(meeting(room(at(Ardsley(Oaks( Club(were(John((Jack)(and(Margaret(Harrison.( Although(I(didn’t(realize(it(at(the(time(I’d(been(at( school(with(one(of(their(son’s,(David,(and(like(me( they(lived(at(Swinton(and(thus(a(connection(was( formed(that(proved(long(lasting.(Jack(and(Margaret( enjoyed(their(cricket(and(also(photography.(After( Jack’s(death(in(November(1994(he(was(remembered( at(Wombwell(via(the(Jack(Harrison(Photography( award,(for(the(best(local(cricket(photo.(Sadly(the( award(faded(away(after(a(few(years,(but(in(due( course(Margaret(became(Jack’s(successor(as( Wombwell’s(faithful(photographer(at(our(speaker( meetings:(her(images(have(graced(the(pages(of(the( ‘Twelfth(Man’(magazine(for(many(years.(In(addition( her(sterling(work((for(many(years(in(conjunction(with( Audrey(Moxon)(on(Thursday(evenings(involved( managing(the(Society’s(raffle(and(organizing(the( prizes.(She,(Audrey(and(often(our(ViceUChairman,(Ron( Firth,(would(spend(the(first(half(of(each(meeting,( folding(and(placing(the(raffle(tickets(in(a(bag(for(the( draw(at(the(close(of(the(night.(It(is(the(little(things( that(matter(at(Wombwell(and(Margaret(played(her( full(part(in(the(smooth(running(of(activities,(both( within(the(meeting(room(and(as(a(much(valued( committee(member.(I(will(miss(Margaret’s(presence( and(the(warmth(of(her(welcome(at(Wombwell.(I’m( certain(that(fellow(Society(stalwarts(and(members( will(tell(you(the(same.( HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH% ROY'FOSTER' Roy%Edmund%Staveley%Foster,%who%died%aged%81%after% a%brave%battle%against%cancer,%was%a%truly%great% member%of%the%Wombwell%Cricket%Lovers'%Society.%He% succeeded%to%the%Treasurership%at%New%Year%2007,% probably%the%Wombwell's%darkest%hour.%% We%headhunted%Roy%for%the%role%nine%months%ahead% of%the%2007%AGM,%and%he%came%to%the%first%of%the% Committee's%nine%crisis%meetings%that%year.%As%the% full%truth%of%our%affairs%began%to%unravel%I%asked%Roy% how%he%felt%about%the%legacy%he%had%agreed%to% inherit.%“I%am%pretty%frightened%at%what%I%have%heard% so%far,”%he%responded.%A%painstaking%man%with%a%fine% career%of%localHgovernment%service%as%a%Finance% Officer%behind%him,%Roy%set%about%his%role%with%grim% determination.% Working%principally%with%ViceHChairman%Ron%Firth% and%Secretary%Mick%Pope,%Roy%brought%our%affairs%to% order.%Roy%was%brave.%A%weaker%man%would%have% turned%his%back%on%the%Society%at%that%time.%We%are% not%really%a%charity,%although%much%of%our%work%in% the%community%is%altruistic,%but%we%determined%to% conduct%ourselves%thenceforth%in%accordance%with% the%Charities%Act.%Roy%brought%in%Tony%Perry,%an% experienced%Barnsley%Council%auditor%specialising%in% fraud,%would%you%believe,%to%be%our%independent% examiner,%and%Tony%has%assured%us%that%he%will% continue%these%duties%with%Roy's%successor,%Brian% Sanderson.% I%received%a%charming%article%about%Roy%from%his% Bridlington%friend,%Malcolm%McKie,%together%with%a% group%photo%of%the%North%Frodingham%team%when% they%played%together%in%1950.%It%is%thanks%to%Malcolm% and%to%Roy's%sister,%Margaret%Humble,%that%we%are% able%to%publish%this%photo%as%a%tribute%to%Roy.% Roy%started%his%cricket%on%the%tarmacked%playground% of%the%village%school,%moving%on%to%the%playing%fields% of%Bridlington%School.%The%village%field%was%ploughed% Roy&presents&a&Wombwell&glass&to&our&guest,&Brian&Wheeler,& back&in&January&2011 !
