Anthony!could!also!recall!the!epic!Surrey!and! Yorkshire!battles!of!the!1950s,!culminating!in!the! famous!championshipMwinning!year!of!1959.!After! the!famous!victory!at!Brighton,!they!went!to! Scarborough!for!their!next!fixture!and!had! cheering!supporters!outside!their!hotel!until! 2.30am!in!the!morning.! Anthony!concluded!with!more!information!about! the!Southern!group!and!their!fundraising! activities.! The!question!and!answer!covered!lots!of! championship!questions,!memories!of!Neil!Lloyd! and!the!trophy!in!his!name,!prospects!for!the! Ashes!in!Australia!etc,!to!conclude!a!superb! evening.! December!8 th !–!Christmas!Sunday!with! Mike!Cowan! After!Yorkshire!captain,!Andrew!Gale,!decided!to! take!up!an!opportunity!to!play!some!cricket!in! Australia!during!their!2013M14!summer,! Wombwell’s!reliable!and!supportive!Patron,!Mike! Cowan,!kindly!stepped!forward!at!relatively!short! notice!to!entertain!members!at!our!annual! Christmas!Sunday!lunch!in!December.! Mike,!despite!having!virtually!stepped!off!a!cruise! ship!to!attend!the!lunch,!was!in!his!usual!sparkling! form,!mixing!stories!and!very!warm,!funny! anecdotes!with!memories!of!players!and!those!he! played!with!and!against!down!the!years.!Mike! remains!a!much!sort!after!speaker!and!Wombwell! are!most!fortunate!to!call!upon!him!for!Votes!of! Thanks!at!our!gatherings!or!to!close!affairs!at!our! Christmas!lunch.!This!year,!though,!we!were!lucky! enough!to!have!him!as!the!major!act!and!a!real! treat!it!proved!to!be.!Yorkshire!cricket!writer!and! County!Yearbook!Editor,!David!Warner,!added! closing!remarks!and!thanks!to!Mike!to!round!off! the!first!half!of!the!Society’s!winter!schedule!of! events.! MP! 2014! January!16 th !–!Colin!Shindler! Our!chairman!introduced!Colin,!a!University! lecturer!who!is!involved!in!TV!and!Films.!Colin!has! also!written!several!books,!and!is!currently! writing!a!biography!of!Bob!Barber,!exMLancashire! and!England!batsman.! Colin!explained!that!although!he!lives!in! Cambridge,!he!is!still!very!much!a!Mancunian,!who! supports!Lancashire!cricket,!and!the!red!side!of! the!city!at!soccer.!Colin!gave!further!details!of!his! background,!including!his!involvement!in!films! (Buster!etc)!and!TV!(Lovejoy!etc).! After!that!we!were!treated!to!some!very! wonderful!stories!of!Roses!cricket!in!the!golden! days!of!Hutton/Washbrook,!when!it!was!not! unusual!to!have!crowds!of!up!to!70,000!attending! over!the!three!days.!Colin’s!background! knowledge!of!the!game!was!absolutely!fascinating,! going!right!back!to!the!beginning!when!even! Shakespeare!got!a!mention.! Out!of!the!many,!many!matches!he!had!seen,!one! in!particular!had!very!fond!memories!when! Lancashire!and!Yorkshire!were!one!and!two!in!the! championship!table.!Lancashire!had!won!two!out! of!the!last!three!meetings!and!Vic!Wilson’s! Anthony!Bradbury!with!Norman!Hazell !
