The Twelfth Man 2015

3 In this edition of the Society magazine, members and readers will find the usual collection of feature pieces including a tribute to the Society’s recipient of the 2014 ‘Services to English Cricket’ award, England captain, Charlotte Edwards, compiled by one of our guest speakers (November 2014) Isabelle Duncan. Another Wombwell guest, journalist Brian Halford, turns the clock back well over 100 years to examine the life (and death) of Percy Jeeves. The magazine’s regular feature, ‘A Talk with an Old Yorkshire Cricketer’, by former editor Norman Hazell MBE, this year focuses on Brian Close. Around those central features are details and content covering all of the Society’s winter meetings and news, a sprinkle of book reviews and sad farewells and, of course, details of our annual awards and a look back at the Society’s winter coaching nets for 2015. Sadly Ben Hampshire was able to complete only one issue as The Twelfth Man Editor and I have found myself having to step in to ‘old shoes’ at short notice to see through the publication of the 2015 magazine. However I hope that will be just a temporary situation. If this Society is to continue functioning then it needs your help – the WCLS members – to fill ALL of its various, voluntary roles. The position of The Twelfth Man Editor is one of those major roles and, as readers will see below, the Society is keen to hear, as soon as possible, from anyone who feels able and willing to step into the Editor’s chair. Please do get in touch. Finally, my thanks to all who have contributed material, articles and content to this year’s publication. In particular, my thanks to Committee member, Colin Barker, who stepped forward at the eleventh hour to proof-read the pages and check content. Mick Pope Acting Editor EDITORIAL It is my pleasure to give the report about the financial situation of the Society at the close of the 2014/15 year. WCLS has made a profit of £851.34 up to 30 June 2015. This is due to a small increase in the subscription rates and, once again, donations by generous members and speakers giving their time at reduced rates and, in some instances, free of charge. I thank you all for your time and funds to help keep this excellent Society going. I would also like to thank Ron Firth for his organisation of the Christmas lunch and the pie and peas supper evening at the end of the season. In addition I am grateful to Brian Workman for his organisation of the Wombwell youth coaching sessions and for the collection of the relevant fees/monies in this regard. On behalf of the Society I would like to wish Brian all the very best for the future as he moves south. Thirdly my thanks to Membership Officer, Ali Saad, for the collection and processing of the membership subscriptions. Without the help of these three people my job would be impossible. Just a note to say I hope that more members will come to the meetings and enjoy a great evening, but also help to keep this Society functioning.
