Business at the AGM in September 1964 must have been swiftly concluded as Basil D’Oliviera was waiting to talk to Society members. He proved “a charming visitor” according to the The Twelfth Man reviewer. The October annual dinner brought writer, Denzil Batchelor, and former Derbyshire and England leg-spin bowler, Tommy Mitchell, to Barnsley and in a bustling November there were visits from Brian Sellers, a contingent from Warwickshire (Leslie Deakins, Jack Bannister and Alan Smith) and Sussex’s Alan Oakman. The New Year welcomed ex-Derbyshire skipper Guy Willatt, Surrey and England’s Micky Stewart, BBC’s Robert Hudson and Geoff Boycott. Into March with a trio of Yorkshire players – John Hampshire, Mel Ryan and Jimmy Binks, from Glamorgan Peter Walker and Hamish Miller. Into April and more guests – Brian Bolus, Mike Brearley, A.A.Thomson and Arthur Booth – to round off what must have been an exhausting programme! The Secretary’s frantic letter writing brought greetings and messages back from members throughout the cricketing world, as Jack Sokell spread the news of WCLS far and wide in those long ago days before Twitter and Facebook.
