18 was captained by David Garner. Whilst at Grimethorpe he was a member of the team which won the Hepworth Cup in1982. He was Chairman of the Barnsley and District Umpires Association and was a former secretary of the Barnsley Cricket League. His funeral service was well attended by former playing colleagues in both football and cricket and by the members of the society. Keith’s Grandad, George Donkin, as well as playing local cricket played football for Barnsley F.C. and had trials for England. THE Society was shocked and sadden to hear the death of Geoff Holmes in November at the age of 91. In 2003 he received the Society’s E.H. Umbers Award for services to Yorkshire cricket with Vivien Stone. The pair raised thousands of pounds for Yorkshire youth cricket through running the second-hand bookstall at Emerald Headingley. Before the start of the 2017 season they had raised over £111,000. Some of the mon - ey raised also benefited several of Yorkshire’s most promising young players, either through paying for scholarships or helping to send them on the Club’s pre-season tours. Geoff, who lived at Idle, had been one of Yorkshire County Cricket Club’s staunchest members for many years. In 2008, he and Vivien Stone, of Horsforth, were among the first recipients of Yorkshire CCC’s President’s Medal which is awarded for outstanding services to the Club. In 1998 they took charge of the second-hand book stall at Headingley with proceeds going through the John Featherstone Memorial Foundation to various branches of youth cricket, including the Yorkshire Schools’ Cricket Association and the Joe Lumb competition.
