The Twelfth Man 2019

Mick (L) and Tom (R) Kohler-Cadmore with Andy Jones 28 29 Tonight our chairman, James in- troduced a father and son team - Tom (Yorkshire’s Young Player of the Year) and his father Mick, an integral part of Yorkshire back- room staff who has a special rela- tionship with all the playing staff. Tom may not have been born within the White Rose county, but he saw his move from Worcester- shire midway through the 2017 season as a return home. Al- though born in Kent, his parents live in Hornsea near Hull, and he played for Yorkshire Under-15s before being offered a place in their Academy. When Worcester did the same with the added in- centive of an education at Mal- vern College he left for pastures new. He is an explosive limit- ed-overs batsman and a signifi- cantly improving red-ball player— as his performances towards the end of 2018 showed. The now 24 year-old has been able to return to his first county with the aim of winning trophies and further- ing a career which he hopes will bring England honours. In 2018 Tom made a step in the interna- tional direction as he progressed through to England Lions cricket with both the white and red ball. Mick was asked about his role of keeping the Yorkshire dressing room in order. He explained that he was initially offered a similar job for Worcestershire but when Tom moved to Yorkshire Martyn Moxon offered him the position with far-reaching duties which he explained in detail. Tom was asked about his cricket back- ground and, like so many other young cricketers, it started with watching dad play from an early age. Tom’s enthusiasm was fired by England winning the Ashes in that memorable 2005 series (when still available on terrestri- al TV) and he eventually received the offer from Worcestershire which was too good to refuse. Tom was asked his views on so- cial media and said he felt that it needed careful handling and he preferred a low profile attitude to it. Mick felt that a lot of under- standing was required for young players these days and he was only too pleased to help play- ers with any problems they may have. The question and answer session went on well into overtime cov- ering all aspects of the game to make for a fascinating insight into the blossoming career of a very confident and ambitious young professional and the backroom work which goes into the team.
