The Twelfth Man 2019

Jack Sokell Memorial Award, chosen by Darren Crossland Colleen Morley Memorial Award 36 37 This young man has bowled really well and moves the ball and bowls a very good line and length, ensuring that he puts the batsman under pressure. He needs to work hard on his follow through and variations in his bowl- ing. He has improved with the bat and has worked hard on his footwork, looking more and more like a batsman who will continue to develop and grow in confidence. He listens and wants to improve so I do not see why he can- not continue to develop. Mohammed Khizer Rafiq . The winner of this award needs to work on his release and follow through. He has bowled with consistency and troubles most batsman with the bowl mainly due to swinging the ball naturally inwards. His batting has improved during the ten weeks, playing more attacking shots but defends well. He always listens and just gets on with playing in a very quiet manner. I am proud to give this young lad this award and it is well deserved. Abdullah Ameen Jamil. BETWEEN TWELFTH MEN A round-up of events in the cricket world since the 2018 Magazine Tom Kohler-Cadmore, who made some prom- ising scores at the close of the 2018 season, was awarded his county cap by Yorkshire CCC on 28 February. In April the ECB an- nounced plans for wom- en’s cricket that would mean counties no longer operate women’s teams but instead teams would be based on the eight franchise locations in The Hundred. It seems likely that a number of counties will attempt to oppose the plans devel- oped by Clare Connor, the managing director of England women’s crick- et. Later, in June the ECB dropped its plans. Geoff Cope was elected as President of Yorkshire County Cricket Club for a two year term at the AGM on 23 March. Virat Kohli, Jos Buttler, Tammy Beaumont, Sam Curran and Rory Burns were named as Wisden 2019 Cricketers of the Year. Alex Hales was with- drawn from the England one-day squad in late April after failing a rou- tine pre-season drug test. This followed a period of absence from the Nottinghamshire team during the Royal London Cup in April due to undisclosed ‘personal reasons’. Hales was also still serving a suspended match ban from England for his part in a fight out- side a night club in Bris- tol in September 2017. Hales was subsequently omitted from the World Cup squad. Tom Kohler-Cadmore of Yorkshire and Joe Clarke of Nottinghamshire were notified in early May that they would not be eligible for any Eng- land-based team pend- ing an investigation by the independent Cricket Disciplinary Committee. It follows their involve- ment during their their time at Worcestershire in the events leading to Alex Hepburn, a former player there, being con- victed of rape at Here- ford Crown Court. Al- though neither player figured in the charges laid in the trial, they had taken part in a ‘sexual conquest’ game along with Hepburn via social media. The CDC subse- quently in July fined both men £2,000 for bringing the game into disrepute and thereafter their eli- gibility for the national teams was restored. Dom Bess, the Somerset off-spinner joined York- shire on loan for a month in May. He is seen as providing cover for Adil Rashid during his time with England as well as providing him with first- team cricket. The ECB and the counties were reported in June to be in dispute over the contracts that the ECB want to introduce for The Hundred, which seek ten-year deals, whereas the ECB’s broadcast deal with Sky and the BBC covers only five years. Counties who will not be involved in staging matches (the non-Test Match grounds) are seeking bigger payments from the ECB than the £1.3million they have been promised. The ECB and Surrey CCC have reached agree- ment over the naming of the Hundred team to be based at the Oval af- ter a lengthy dispute. It will be called Oval Greats and joins the other teams who have been confirmed as Man- chester Originals, Leeds Superchargers, Trent Rockets, Birmingham Phoenix, London Spir- it (at Lord’s), Southern Brave (at Southampton) and Welsh Fire (at Car- diff). In June, Yorkshire an- nounced the signing of Keshav Maharaj, the South-African spin bowl- er for three Champion- ship matches, replacing Dom Bess after his loan spell ended. Marcus Trescothick, Somerset and former England opener will end his 27 year career at the end of the 2019 season.
