The Twelfth Man 2020

The Archive section has several looks at Society history with Mick Pope whilst writ- er Jeremy Lonsdale has given us a special piece on Abe Waddington . Norman Ha- zell continues his series of talks with old Yorkshire players with Craig White . As always, there’s a look at our winter season of speakers and the junior coaching in the Review section and the Wombwell Regis- ter contains all the reports of the Society’s officers. I hope therefore that you have plenty to enjoy as we creep towards autumn and winter. And, by the way - next year’s theme almost chooses itself: the Platinum Jubilee of the Wombwell Cricket Lovers’ Society. Stay safe, everyone. Back history of The Twelfth Man THE TWELFTH MAN ISSUE 66 / 2020 I am delighted to offer my congratulations to James who so loyally drives from Leeds to take the Chair for our regular meetings. James doesn’t miss many but he is safe in the knowledge that Jack, Vice-Chairman will always fill-in should he miss - and may I add my personal thanks to Jack for his kindness in picking me up en route to Club or Hotel for meetings. Of course, Brian, our Treasurer shows continuing loyalty as he never misses a meeting, travelling down from Headingley and organising regular raffles. Christopher, our new Sec- retary has introduced new ideas as well as taking on the important role of Editor of our great magazine, helped by cheerful Andrew, young Assistant Secretary while the unseen quiet work of Ali organises the very important work of membership. Meanwhile our increasing number of visits to Dodworth on Monday afternoons con- tinues to prove popular, allowing mem- bers to meet big names and get home in time for tea, balanced with our traditional Thursday evenings at the Working Men’s Club. A most important aspect of our great Wombwell society is the coaching scheme, started many years ago by my good friend Derek Moxon, which has helped so many young players improve their skill, as well as instilling them with the outlook to de- velop as true sportspeople. Long may it continue! Dickie Bird
